How important is an apostrophe, you ask? Allow me to display.
"Know that thing you're borrowing? Can we use it next week? We'll give it back!"
vs.
"Know that thing you're borrowing? Can we use it next week? Well give it back!"
This is why people get fired over emails.

It's true. There should be a guide distributed to folks. This is because it matters, goddamnit.
I saw a shirt the other day that said "your retarded" and it made me laugh out loud.
It's not just the apostrophe either. It's the written word itself. The problem is there are so many different ways to infer a phrase when it is written vs. when it is spoken. I have learned the hard way, several times (which I suppose means I actually didn't learn, but...) that it is never a good idea to discuss anything of any importance over email.
your retarded. "you know what i hate? when your retarded brother-in-law comes in and starts making a mess of things, like he always does." your retarded....heh, classic.
